Big Medium is proud to present the 4th West Austin Studio Tour!

The West Austin Studio Tour is a free, self-guided tour that champions the abundance of talent within Austin’s large and wildly diverse creative community. The public is invited to discover new artistic talent, see working studios, learn about artists’ tools, techniques, and inspirations, and support the arts community by building their personal art collections with the work of local artists.

 WEST Basics

WEST is divided into four participant categories: Artist Studios, Exhibitions, Happenings, and Select Events. Artist Studios and Exhibitions are free to the public and open on the weekends of May 9-10 & 16-17 from 11am - 6pm. Happenings are also free, occurring on the weekends of the tour with varying hours. Select Events may be ticketed and take place throughout tour weekends as well as the weekdays and weeknights in between.

Please keep in mind that many WEST locations are in residential areas. Our neighbors have been very welcoming to tour visitors over the years, and it’s important to respect and reciprocate that hospitality. Please don’t be too loud or cause disturbances; avoid leaving any trash behind; drive and park your cars thoughtfully; and whenever possible, use bikes or public transportation to navigate your way around the tour.

Select Events are projects or events, organized in collaboration with Big Medium. These events highlight partnerships that provide financial and ideological support for both parties involved, as well as a unique experience for the audience.

This is where the creativity begins. For many of these spaces, this is the only time of year that you can get a special glimpse into the inspiration, process, and techniques of the artist. In this category, you can see home studios, spaces in larger studio complexes, or stand-alone commercial studios.

Exhibitions take place in spaces that are either dedicated to exhibiting art year-round or have created shows specifically for WEST at their location. In this category, you can see galleries, theatres, or museums as well as a few select nonarts-based spaces.

Happenings are singular events, contained within a 24-hour period. This category may include special exhibitions, installations, temporary or permanent public art, competitions, art-centered celebrations, educational programming, and art-themed parties. Be sure to check the date and time for each Happening.

Big Medium awards artists fellowships based on artistic merit and financial limitations. This year, the Big Medium Fellowship Program provided partial or full financial support to cover the participant fees of 23 WEST artists. Just look for the icon above throughout the site to identify this year’s fellowship recipients.

Under each WEST participant listing is a helpful Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) graphic. Each square within the graphic represents a different accessibility feature that is or is not available at the participant’s location. The boxes correspond to the numbered list below. If a box is filled in with a dot that means that accessibility feature is available at the space.
