115. The Upshaws of County Line: An American Family

Photography

The Upshaws of County Line: An American Family presents photographs and oral history collected by photographer Richard Orton over a twenty-five year period in the freedom colony of County Line, an African American community founded by the Upshaw family after Emancipation. Their story is the story of emancipated blacks who, unlike most others, created a relatively autonomous existence for themselves after being enslaved.
