273. Saul Jerome San Juan

Oil and acrylic on claybord and canvas

I spent summer 2016 photographing men with blue eyes and fair complexion, minimizing shadows through soft natural lighting. Using my usual limited palette of black, white, red, and yellow, I make oil paintings from the resulting images, informed by Josef Albers's color theory, inspired by the light in Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park Series, and tempered by Michaël Borremans's enigmatic elegance.
